The military transport aircraft C-390 Millennium, developed by Brazilian manufacturer Embraer, was officially included in Greece’s Long-Term Defense Procurement Program, according to information published by the OnAlert portal on April 22, 2025.
This decision marks a strategic step in modernizing the Hellenic Air Force’s transport fleet, which has operated American-made C-130 Hercules aircraft for decades.
Plan includes initial purchase of three aircraft
Under the procurement plan, the Greek Air Force recommended the purchase of at least three C-390 units in the initial phase, with the possibility of increasing the number in future stages. The acquisitions are part of a 12-year defense planning framework. However, actual implementation is expected only at the end of this decade, as current priorities include upgrading 38 F-16 Block 50 fighters to the Viper configuration.
While awaiting the arrival of the new aircraft, Greece will continue operating its reduced fleet of C-130s and C-27J Spartans. Modernization of the C-27Js is planned, as well as the signing of a new five-year support contract, called Follow-On Support (FOS), scheduled for 2026.
Current challenges in the transport fleet
Currently, the availability rate of the Hellenic Air Force’s C-130s remains low, despite the efforts of the 356th Tactical Transport Squadron “Hercules” and the Hellenic Aerospace Industry. According to Army Recognition, by early 2025, only four C-130 aircraft were operational, with a fifth expected to return to service in the coming months.
In the past, Greece formally requested retired C-130s from the United States but abandoned the acquisition due to high refurbishment costs. A new request was made, this time targeting surplus aircraft still in service, with expectations that some units may become available in 2025.
About the C-390 Millennium
The C-390 Millennium stands out for its tactical/logistical transport capabilities, aerial refueling, firefighting, and aeromedical evacuation. With high operational availability and a lower life-cycle cost compared to traditional models, the aircraft offers a modern solution to the demands of contemporary military aviation.
